2021 has been a year of changes and personal growth for many of us. We are all learning to express ourselves much more and many of us may choose to do this through the styling of our homes. The timeless classics remain on trend, but we have some emerging new living room trends for 2022. Take a look at the trends of 2022 to give your living space a refresh for the year ahead.

1. Multi-functional Spaces

Single-use spaces may become a thing of the past as we spend more time at home than ever. Multi-functional spaces are becoming an increasing living room trend as your living space has more uses than before. Living rooms have become home offices, home schooling classrooms, and entertaining spaces to suit our new style of living.

Zoning areas for work, rest, and play, is a good idea, whether you have a single or open-plan living room. It divides and creates individual spaces to stop the room from looking cluttered and makes it obvious what the function of each item is. Non-permanent dividers, rugs, and tactical furniture layout helps separation without turning your living space into separate rooms. Shelving, ladders, and platforms can function as room dividers and open up the room.

Make the most of your space with innovative room-dividing tactics.

2. Warm & Neutral Tones

Warm, neutral colours are on trend for living rooms. After all, this is the space in your home where you want to feel a sense of warmth and comfort. Having a neutral colour base is the perfect plan to open up endless design possibilities. Popular colour patterns include warm tones such as chocolate brown, camel, ruse, and some cooler tones like stone greys and off-whites.

Curate your space and layer blankets, rugs, and cushions to create a cosy, three dimensional space. You can stick with the neutral theme with raw materials such as wooden furniture or add pops of colour like reds or blues. A warm, neutral base is ideal for any home.

3. Bring the Outdoors in

Incorporating the outdoors into the living room has become increasingly popular and is set to remain so for 2022. After spending so much time inside due to the Pandemic, more and more house plants and greenery are being added to the living space.

Plants create a sense of calmness and purify the air. Do your research before buying your plants. Some are easier to care for than others and you will want to find the perfect plant for you, whether you have a green thumb or are a total newbie.

  • Sweetheart Plant - A versatile plant that can be kept in semi to full-shaded rooms.
  • Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree - Stylish bushy trees that need sunny rooms and to be watered weekly.
  • Monstera- Native to tropical rainforests, this is a plant with unique cut-out-shaped leaves that thrive in medium to low-light interiors.
  • Palm- Palms can come big or small and flourish in partial sun, without much care.
  • Snake Plant- Absorbs negativity and toxic pollutants, prospering in indirect sunlight and with infrequent watering.

On a larger scale, interior architects are predicted to be building more large glass windows and doors to show off the outdoor views of peoples’ homes. Natural woods and warm browns are perfect complements for a nature filled, leafy living room.

4. Japandi Interior

Japandi is an east-meets-west trend that combines Scandinavian and Japanese interior design styles. Together, the styles create relaxing, minimalist design principles using natural materials, creating a focus on warmth and calmness.

This style encourages slow living, which many people may feel they need for 2022 in order to lead a more balanced life. A typical Japandi style living room will be full of natural light and plants to boost wellbeing and connect with nature.

Declutter your space, use natural fabrics and clean lines, and fill your space with light oak to create the ultimate Japandi style living area.

5. Tranquil Green

Green is the colour of harmony and renewal, which a good prediction for what 2022 will be about. We associate green with tranquillity and the outdoors, which seems to be the theme that will be running through 2022 living spaces. Whether you opt for a rich green, or more of a muted style, your living room will be the epicentre of relaxation.

Use a bold dark or olive green paint all over the walls for a cosy, wrap-around feel. Good lighting is important here to stop the room from feeling too small or dark. Depending on your preference, greys or pastel pinks will help to break up the colour in the space and add some more personality to your living room.

If you feel like green everywhere is too daring for you, green accents will enrich your home without dominating the living area. Choose more muted and pastel colours such as sage green across your feature wall to get the best of both worlds, or use a neutral base and natural, wooden furniture with pops of green throughout your space.

According to these predicted trends, 2022 seems to be the year of relaxation, growth, and openness. That said, however you choose to decorate your living space, you can’t go wrong because it’s all about self-expression and creating your own ideal home.
